Ι What Are Magnetic Door Catches?

Magnetic door catches are a type of magnetic tool designed to keep doors securely closed using magnetic force. They are also known as magnetic cabinet catches, magnetic door latches, or door magnets. These catches usually include two main parts: a magnetic catch body and a metal striker plate. When the door closes, the magnetic catch and striker plate attract each other, holding the door in place without relying on traditional mechanical latches or locks.

Compared with mechanical latches, magnetic door catches operate quietly, have no moving parts that wear out, and require minimal maintenance. This makes them well suited for residential and commercial settings where convenience and reliability matter. Magnetic door catches are widely used in cabinets, wardrobes, and lightweight doors, providing a discreet solution and a clean, modern look that matches many furniture styles.

Magnetic Circuit Design of Magnetic Door Catches

Magnetic door catches are generally divided into two main types: the standard series and the ultra-thin series. Each type uses a different magnet material and magnetic circuit design to match its intended application. The standard series is more common in the market because it offers reliable performance at a lower cost.

The standard series has a thicker magnetic catch body, with the magnetic system sealed inside a protective casing. This casing is typically made from plastic or stainless steel and includes two mounting holes for stable installation. Its magnetic circuit follows a sandwich layout, where a ferrite magnet is placed between two steel pole pieces. This structure concentrates the magnetic force toward the striker plate, delivering strong holding power at short distances. FEA results also show that this circuit can provide higher close-range holding strength than a typical pot magnet structure. Since it uses ferrite magnets, the standard series contains no easily corroded magnetic material, giving it good durability in daily use.

The ultra-thin series is designed with a slim profile for installations where space is limited. It uses smaller, flat Neodymium magnets to maintain holding force while keeping the body thin. The magnetic circuit is optimized for compact size, ensuring efficient flux in a narrow structure and balancing slimness with practical holding performance.

Magnetic Door Catches Installation Guide

Place the magnetic catch body on the cabinet shelf with its front edge flush to the shelf front. Use a pencil to mark the screw holes.
Drill small pilot holes on the marks, then fasten the catch body to the shelf with screws.
Hold the striker plate on the inside of the cabinet door, lining it up with the catch body when the door closes. Mark the holes, drill pilot holes, and screw the striker plate onto the door.
Close the door and test the hold. If it releases too easily, loosen the catch body screws, slide the body slightly forward for better contact, and tighten the screws again.
